SEAHO July Spotlight: Katie Lewis

SEAHO was my professional home before I even knew what it was.

As an undergraduate, I always thought clinical psychology was my path. Closing out my junior year at Florida State University, I found myself sitting in Dr. Adrienne Frame's ("A-Frame") office. Shining in the sunlight was the Cromag.

(Conversation paraphrased.)

Me: "What's that?"

A-Frame: "The Cromag! It's a very important, symbolic representation of SEAHO magic."

Me: "What's a SEAHO?"

My professional journey shifted that day.

I soon found myself enrolling in social justice and student leadership courses during my senior year, applying to Higher Education graduate programs, and ultimately accepting a graduate assistantship with University Housing at North Carolina State University. My first SEAHO Annual Conference was in Louisville, Kentucky, in 2014, and I am beyond thankful to have attended—and become involved in—every conference since.

From my start with the committee formerly known as the Graduate Issues and Involvement Committee, to Corporate Partners, the Program Committee, various task forces, and now serving as Director of Committees, I've learned that sustained involvement, active engagement, and intentional relationship-building are the Fountain of Youth for our association.

I have been incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by SEAHO professionals who have inspired me throughout my undergraduate, graduate, and professional journey. They have instilled strong ethics, modeled unwavering commitment, shared their knowledge, recognized life's hardships, celebrated successes, and built relationships that continue to shape me today.

To quote one of the most important musicals of our time, Mexodus:

"Here I am doing this. I don't think I'm their wildest dreams, because where I'm from, you don't get to dream like this. I'm living out their wildest impossibility. And it's only because of their love that preceded me. The work that preceded me. The sacrifice that preceded me. They bought and paid for all my days... so the very least I can do is welcome their names into spaces. And try to make the impossible, possible."

That quote reminds me why SEAHO means so much to me. Every opportunity I've had has been made possible because someone came before me, invested in me, and believed in me. My hope is to honor that investment by doing the same for others.

A few days ago, our Residence Life team gathered for our annual staff retreat.

Like so many things in our profession, there was an incredible amount of work that happened before anyone walked through the door.

There were welcome signs.

Door decorations.

New shirts waiting for everyone.

Plenty of caffeine.

Music playing as people arrived.

Thoughtfully planned activities.

None of those things, by themselves, made the retreat special.

But together, they created an experience.

They welcomed people in.

They reminded people that they mattered.

They created a space where people could show up as their authentic selves, reconnect with one another, and remember why they chose this work in the first place.

And it reminded me of something.

July is a funny month.

It can't quite decide what it wants to be.

We're still finishing one academic year while preparing for another. Room turns are underway. Students are receiving their final assignments. Construction projects are nearing completion. New staff are arriving. Training has begun. We haven't quite finished one chapter, and we're already beginning the next.

We're living in the in-between.

And maybe that's exactly where some of our most important work happens.

Much like the retreat, July is filled with details that, on their own, don't seem all that remarkable.

A room that's turned.

A training agenda.

A maintenance request.

A paint touch-up.

A bulletin board.

A key checked.

A conversation with a colleague.

A smile at a front desk.

No single detail creates the experience.

But together, they become one.

One of the most meaningful moments of our retreat came when we sat together in a circle and answered one simple question: Tell us about a time when a fellow staff member had your back.

The stories were powerful.

Some were funny. Some were emotional. Every one of them reminded us that what people remember most isn't just the work we accomplish together, but how we care for one another while we're doing it.

It made me realize that's true for our students, too.

People don't remember every detail.

They remember how they felt.

They remember whether someone knew their name.

Whether they felt welcomed.

Whether they felt seen.

Whether they found a place where they could simply be themselves.

Living on campus is so much more than having a place to stay. It's an experience. It's connection. It's growth. It's learning to live with others, navigate challenges, and discover your place in a community.

And experiences like that don't happen by accident.

They happen because thousands of intentional, often unseen moments come together to create something bigger than themselves.

Maybe that's why July matters so much.

It reminds us that some of our most important work happens before anyone ever arrives.

The in-between may not always be the most exciting season.

But it just might be the most important.

As you continue through these busy weeks, I hope you'll remember that the same care we put into preparing our buildings should also be reflected in how we care for and prepare one another.

Welcome someone new.

Check in with a teammate.

Encourage a colleague.

Tell someone how much they've impacted you.

Invest in the people beside you.

Because no single person creates the experience.

But together, we create one.

Before long, our halls will be full again.

Our students may never see all the work that went into preparing for their arrival, but they'll experience it in a thousand little ways.

They may never notice every detail.

But they'll remember how they felt.

And that's the experience we've been creating all along.

When I think about my professional journey, one thing is certain: SEAHO is my professional home.

As a housing professional of more than 20 years, SEAHO has been the place where I've learned, grown, led, and built some of the most meaningful relationships of my career. I've served in a variety of volunteer roles, from State Representative and Program Committee member to Host Committee volunteer, Conference Coordinator, and now Director of Communications on the Executive Board. While those opportunities have been rewarding, the positions I serve in aren't what keep me coming back. The people are my why.

Throughout my time in SEAHO, I've found incredible mentors who challenged me to think differently, encouraged me to take risks, and helped shape me into the professional I am today. Some taught me the intricacies of housing operations. Others helped me navigate student affairs and leadership. Along the way, those mentors became colleagues, and many of those colleagues became lifelong friends.

My leadership journey in SEAHO began as a graduate student who simply wanted to learn from others. I was attending an ALAHO conference when someone asked if anyone might be interested in serving as the State Representative. I looked at my supervisor, Lauren Taylor. She nodded yes, and my hand shot up. About a month later, I found myself at a Governing Council meeting listening to leaders like Andrea Trinklein and Gay Perez talk about our organization while meeting people like Ben Wicker and Gavin Roark, whom I would later call friends.

Finding a community that welcomed me, invested in me, and created opportunities for me to contribute shaped the professional I am today. Every conference, committee assignment, presentation, and volunteer role helped me grow while allowing me to give back to an organization that has given so much to me.

One of my favorite things about SEAHO is how people in our organization simply show up for each other. Whether it's a conversation in a conference hallway, a mentorship relationship, or a collaborative project, people in this region consistently support one another. The support is genuine, and the relationships extend far beyond our annual conference.

The impact of those relationships extends beyond conference events and committee meetings. In fact, my last two professional positions can be traced directly back to connections I made through SEAHO. I spent seven incredible years at Louisiana State University because of relationships that began through involvement in the region. Professional interactions grew into mutual respect, friendship, and opportunities that ultimately shaped a significant chapter of my career. A shared love for LSU certainly didn't hurt either... Geaux Tigers!

During my time at LSU, my supervisor, Renee Richard-Gonce, also introduced me to the WOHO mentorship group. That experience continues to shape me as a woman in leadership, a mother, and a professional.

My current role at the University of South Carolina came about in much the same way. Through years of presenting on housing operations, serving in leadership roles, collaborating with colleagues across the region, and becoming a resource for other professionals, I developed relationships built on trust and respect. Those connections made it easier for others to see my abilities as a leader and opened doors to opportunities I may never have pursued otherwise.

Serving in my first Executive Board position alongside our President and my supervisor, Dr. April Barnes, has proven to be one of the best professional experiences of my career. It has reinforced what I have always believed about SEAHO: leadership is at its best when it is rooted in relationships, collaboration, and a shared commitment to serving others.

When people talk about networking, they often focus on making contacts. SEAHO has taught me that the real value comes from building authentic relationships. The friendships, mentorships, and professional partnerships I've developed through this organization have enriched my career in ways I never could have anticipated.

SEAHO allows me to stay connected to the region through leadership, but it also provides space for us as professionals to give back and fill gaps where needed. Hosting monthly Assignments Roundtable sessions with Dr. Zach Blackmon from Wake Forest University is just one way that I consistently engage with SEAHO members. What started as a professional development opportunity has become a space where housing professionals can exchange ideas, troubleshoot challenges, celebrate successes, and support one another throughout the year.

Those conversations remind me of what makes SEAHO special. We have countless members who are willing to share their knowledge and help each other succeed.

Today, I remain involved because I believe in the power of having a professional community. I want new professionals to find the same encouragement, opportunities, and friendships that have enriched my own career. If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's that SEAHO becomes what you invest in it, and the return on that investment is immeasurable.

As I look ahead, I can't imagine my professional life without SEAHO. It has been a constant source of inspiration, growth, and connection. Most importantly, it has given me a professional home.

You know there are good times to be had whenever members of SEAHO get together, and it was no different this past month when the SEAHO Executive Board came together for our summer meeting.

In late May, the University of South Carolina had the privilege of hosting our summer board meeting, and while we accomplished a tremendous amount of work, what stood out to me most was the energy in the room. There is something powerful about being surrounded by people who care deeply about this association, this profession, and each other. The conversations were thoughtful, the laughter was constant, and the commitment to moving SEAHO forward was evident in every discussion.

And while we had a whole lot of fun together, we also left Columbia with meaningful momentum.

One of the most important outcomes of our time together was identifying the initial priorities that will guide implementation of our new strategic plan. As we begin moving this vision into action, we are focusing on areas that strengthen engagement, expand professional development opportunities, and support the long-term sustainability of our association.

Strengthening Engagement & Leadership Pathways

SEAHO is committed to creating clearer and more accessible pathways for involvement across the region. That includes increasing visibility into volunteer and leadership opportunities, amplifying member stories, and strengthening connections between state, regional, and functional-area engagement opportunities.

This work is already beginning through expanded communication efforts, conference connection initiatives, leadership spotlights, and continued conversations about how we help members find meaningful ways to engage.

Expanding Regional Learning & Professional Development

We also remain focused on creating more intentional year-round opportunities for learning and connection. Through functional-area discussions, fireside chats, SEAHO All-Year Sponsorships, and increased visibility into conferences, institutes, and trainings happening across the region, we hope to continue strengthening the learning networks that already exist within SEAHO.

We are especially excited about the continued development of both RELI and the Mid-Level Summit, and the opportunities they will create for professionals across the region. During our board meeting, we spent time creating timelines and identifying next steps for both initiatives as excitement and momentum continue to build.

Ensuring Long-Term Financial Sustainability

As SEAHO continues to grow, we are also taking thoughtful steps to ensure the long-term sustainability of the association. This includes ongoing budget discussions, exploration of diversified revenue opportunities, and conversations about the Legacy Funds Campaign as we work to align financial practices with our mission, values, and future growth.

As this work continues to progress, I look forward to providing ongoing updates around these priority areas and the ways they are helping shape the future of our association.

Beyond the strategic work, we also continued development of the 10-Year Document and Leadership Manual, received updates from the Baton Rouge Host Committee and Corporate Partner Committee, and participated in a Sessionize demonstration that ultimately led to board approval for implementation at SEAHO 2027.

Updates from Baton Rouge only added to the excitement surrounding next year's conference, and our conversations with the Corporate Partner Committee reinforced the incredible momentum behind SEAHO All-Year Sponsorships and year-round engagement opportunities.

And through all of it, there was still time for connection, laughter, and community.

One of the things I continue to appreciate most about SEAHO is that we can do meaningful work while still enjoying one another. We can have thoughtful conversations, wrestle with important decisions, and still make space for laughter and relationship-building along the way.

That balance matters.

As I left our summer meeting, I found myself feeling energized about where we are headed. Not because we have all the answers, but because we have passionate people willing to invest in this association and in each other.

Thank you to everyone who continues to serve SEAHO in big and small ways. Your time, talent, ideas, and care are what move this association forward.

And finally, a special thank you to the University of South Carolina team for helping host our board meeting and making everyone feel so welcomed while they were in Columbia.

If I’m being honest, I’m a bit tired. It’s been a long year.

And while I’m a little hesitant to admit that out loud, I have a feeling many of us are ready for the end of the semester.

This season always brings a mix of emotions.

We’re wrapping up another academic year, watching students pack up their rooms, say their goodbyes, and head home for the summer. There’s a sense of closure, a little bit of quiet returning to our halls, and maybe even a moment to catch our breath before we begin preparing for the students who will soon fill them again.

And maybe that’s what makes this work what it is.

There are moments when it feels like the best job in the world.

And there are moments when it feels like the hardest.

Both can be true.

But that experience doesn’t look the same for all of us.

While some of us are stepping into a quieter season, others are just beginning one of their busiest. Our colleagues in operations and facilities are moving full speed ahead, turning spaces, preparing buildings, supporting conferences, and doing the behind-the-scenes work that makes everything we do possible. It’s a different kind of busy, but just as important to the experience we create for our students.

Even in the middle of that, this is also the time of year when we get to step back and reflect on what we’ve helped create: the conversations that happened late at night; the communities that formed; the moments when a student felt like they finally belonged; the times we showed up, stepped in, and made a difference, even when it didn’t feel big at the time. That’s the part of this work that stays with them.

And none of that happens in isolation.

It happens because of the work across our teams—from those creating community every day to our colleagues in operations and facilities who ensure our spaces are ready, safe, and able to support it all.

Because living on campus is more than just having a place to stay. It’s an experience. It’s connection. It’s growth. It’s learning how to live with others, how to navigate challenges, and how to find your place in a community. And that is something students can’t fully replicate anywhere else.

What happens in our residence halls matters.

So while this season may bring a little quiet, a little rest, and maybe even a moment to catch our breath, it is also a time to recognize the impact of what you’ve done.

This work is, at times, the best.

And yes, sometimes it is also the hardest.

But it is meaningful. It is lasting. And it is uniquely ours.

As you move into the weeks ahead, I hope you find moments to rest, reflect, and reset.

And I also encourage you to stay connected. Reach out to a colleague. Check in with a friend. Continue to invest in each other.

Because that’s what makes SEAHO special.

And when the time comes, I know we’ll all be ready to do it again.

Spring is in the air!

I’m not sure about you, but I love this time of year. I think it stems from my early years in Minnesota. Watching that first “spring green” appear on the trees meant we had made it through another long winter and that summer was coming. Even now, I still feel that same sense of childlike wonder as the world shifts from muted browns to vibrant greens, pinks, yellows, blues, and whites. It feels like everything is waking up again—and it’s just so beautiful.

But like most things, there’s another side to spring.

For me, it usually starts about a week before the green appears—a pounding behind my eyes, a throbbing in my sinuses, and congestion that seems to settle everywhere. While the blossoms are exploding with color and joy, the shelves at the grocery store are suddenly empty of allergy medicine.

Spring, for all its beauty, comes with discomfort too.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how change works the same way.

We often focus on the blossoms—the growth, the excitement, the new opportunities. But we don’t always talk about the pollen—the resistance, the fatigue, the parts of change that slow us down or make things feel more difficult before they get better.

It’s been about a month since we gathered in Winston-Salem—a month since we learned, connected, and poured into one another. That time together was energizing, grounding, and full of possibility.

And now, we’re back in the rhythm of our campuses.

So I’ll ask you what I’ve been asking myself:

Have you been able to put that growth into action?
Have you moved forward on the goals you set?
Are you still feeling that energy, or has the pollen started to settle in?

If I’m being honest, I jumped right back into the work on my campus, and I haven’t had as much time to reflect and grow as I intended. Like those spring allergies, the realities of the day-to-day have slowed me down a bit.

But that doesn’t mean the growth isn’t still happening.

Sometimes growth isn’t loud or visible right away. Sometimes it’s happening beneath the surface—in small shifts, in quiet moments of reflection, in the way we show up just a little differently than we did before.

As we enjoy one of the best months of the year, I want to encourage all of us to keep moving forward with resilience and to hold space for both parts of change: the beauty and the discomfort. To celebrate the blossoms, but also give ourselves grace for the pollen. Both are part of the process.

And just like spring, the growth we’re experiencing—even when it feels slow or messy—is leading somewhere meaningful.

As you continue through your semester, I encourage you to stay connected to this community. Reach out to someone you met in Winston-Salem. Schedule that conversation you said you’d have. Check in with a colleague. Share an idea. Ask a question. Make space for connection.

You never know—you might be exactly what someone else needs to get through the pollen and step into their own growth.

Dear SEAHO Family,

As I reflect on our time together at the phenomenal SEAHO 2026 Conference, I am filled with gratitude for the experience we shared and for the responsibility and privilege of stepping into the role of your President. The conference was a powerful reminder of who we are—a community grounded in care, committed to excellence, and deeply invested in one another’s success.

For those who may not know me, I’m Dr. April Barnes. I have the privilege of serving as the Assistant Vice President for University Housing at the University of South Carolina and have spent 27 years in the housing profession. I grew up in a tiny town in northern Minnesota as the daughter of a truck driver, where I learned the value of hard work and showing up for your people. I am also a proud wife and mother, roles that have shaped me just as deeply as any professional title. My path into housing wasn’t traditional. I was a young professional with a makeshift playroom in my apartment and toddlers who sometimes tagged along to programs. There were moments early in my career, and early in SEAHO, when I quietly wondered if there was space for someone whose life and path didn’t look like everyone else’s.

What I found here was not a mold to fit into, but people who made room. Colleagues who invited me into conversations. Mentors who widened the circle. Leaders who treated me like I belonged before I fully believed it myself. That experience didn’t just shape my career; it shaped how I lead. Throughout my time in this profession, I have believed deeply in leading with kindness, professionalism, and the intentional practice of making space for others.

SEAHO has long been a professional home for me, a place where I have found encouragement during challenging seasons, perspective when I needed it most, and colleagues who have become lifelong friends. To now serve this association as President is both humbling and energizing. And what I was reminded of so clearly at this year’s conference is that this sense of home doesn’t happen by accident, it happens because people choose to widen the circle.

I saw it in the conversations during sessions, in the laughter in the hallways, in the meaningful reconnections and quiet moments of affirmation. Even as we navigate complex times in higher education, what stood out to me was our resolve, our creativity, and our heart. That spirit, steady, adaptable, and grounded in care, is exactly what will carry us forward.

Which is why I am especially excited to center our work this year around next year’s conference theme: Rhythm of Resilience.

Resilience is not simply endurance; it is adaptability and reflection. It is growth shaped by experience. And rhythm reminds us that resilience is not a single moment, it is ongoing. It requires balance, intention, and community. In our profession, resilience shows up in how we support students in crisis, how we develop our teams, how we respond to institutional change, and how we care for ourselves and one another.

This year also marks an important moment for our association as we begin implementing our new strategic plan. Developed thoughtfully over the past year, this plan positions SEAHO for intentional and sustainable growth, and now our work is to live it. Implementation will require clarity, accountability, and sustained engagement. It will mean strengthening volunteer structures, deepening professional development opportunities, expanding connection beyond conference season, and ensuring our resources align with our mission. Strategic plans only matter if they shape behavior, and I am committed to ensuring our behavior guides how we lead and how we serve.

Living this plan will require both focus and connection. We will continue strengthening key initiatives already underway, including SEAHO All Year in partnership with our corporate partners and the Mid-Level Summit, ensuring that connection and professional development extend beyond our annual conference. Throughout this year, I look forward to engaging intentionally with a wide range of SEAHO stakeholders, from new professionals to senior housing officers, corporate partners to committee leaders, to listen, learn, and better understand how our association can most effectively serve, connect, and support our members. In partnership with our Board and leadership team, we will identify clear priorities and focus our energy on where it will move our strategic plan from vision to meaningful action.

Over the next year, my hope is that we embrace this rhythm together, creating space for innovation while honoring tradition, investing in development at every level, and moving forward with clarity and care. I am committed to leading with transparency, empathy, and professionalism. Most importantly, I am committed to leading alongside you.

Thank you for the trust you have placed in me and for the energy you bring to this association. As we move into this next chapter, may we each take responsibility for widening the circle just a little more, inviting someone in, making room at the table, and ensuring that the next person who walks into SEAHO never has to wonder if they belong.

A Closing Message

Dearest Gentle Reader,

With the new season of Bridgerton just released, I couldn’t resist a little indulgence. While I lack Lady Whistledown’s razor-sharp wit and scandalous charm, I have thoroughly enjoyed penning these monthly connections with you. I hope my musings have offered some inspiration, a few laughs, and, of course, kept you close to the business of SEAHO — no masquerade balls required (unless you count our annual conference…kidding!)

A year passes in a flash, and my presidential year has been no different. Walking this path in leadership has been one of the highlights of my career, and I am deeply grateful for your trust, support, and belief in me.

What makes SEAHO truly stand out among professional associations is how we stay connected. The depth of our organization is remarkable, our professionals are consummate, and quite honestly, we are a force. Being in the midst of everything SEAHO does has consistently left me in awe. I’ve learned so much about all corners of SEAHO, and the balance of tradition with the forward-thinking nature of our members is what has made me most proud.

From the excitement and energy of our 2025 conference in Huntsville, I carried forward a sense of possibility that guided this year. We launched ambitious initiatives — creating our next Strategic Plan, carving leadership pathways for mid-level professionals, making thoughtful financial decisions, and strengthening our region through the remarkable work of our committees.

A few weeks ago, I attended ACUHO-I’s Regional Summit with housing leaders from across the U.S. and Canada. I left with two strong impressions: first, gratitude for the professionals who held the presidential role before me and the SEAHO leaders who established our reputation for collaboration and innovation. Second, profound appreciation for our membership. Your willingness to engage, attend conferences, and build connections is what carries our tradition of excellence forward — and yes, without needing a column from Lady Whistledown to make it happen.

I look forward to seeing you at SEAHO 2026 in a few weeks. I’ve had the privilege of working with this host committee for the past year, and they are committed to giving you a conference experience that leaves you motivated, inspired, and proud to be part of the SEAHO region. If you can join us, I can promise it will be a memorable gathering. And if you can’t, know that you will be missed — and that the work of SEAHO continues year-round because of colleagues like you.

As I prepare to pass the presidency to Dr. April Barnes, I’m reminded of Lady Whistledown’s closing flourish: a recognition that life — and leadership — is a story we tell together. This year has been one of the most meaningful chapters of my professional life. I am honored to have served as your President, to have learned from you, and worked alongside you. While my title may change to Past-President, my commitment to SEAHO and to this incredible community remains steadfast.

Hello SEAHO,

The new year is here, and I hope you enjoyed a wonderful and restorative winter break. Returning after time away can be challenging—finding our rhythm again while juggling new goals (aka resolutions) that are fresh on our minds. In the spirit of accountability, I’m giving myself a solid C+ on my resolutions so far. I’m reminding myself that progress doesn’t need to be perfect and that staying the course matters more than getting it right every time. Just because I mess up doesn’t mean the whole day—or the whole goal—is wrecked.

I recently read a short story that really hit home for me:

 Imagine this: If you had $86,400 in your bank account and someone stole $10, would you throw away the remaining $86,390 just because one bad thing happened? Or would you move on and live your life? We all have 86,400 seconds each day. Don’t let a 10-second misstep—or 10 seconds of negativity or self-doubt—ruin the remaining 86,390. You are bigger than that.

Pretty powerful, right? While January 1 can be a meaningful reset, every moment of our day holds the same power. There are countless opportunities to move closer to what we want, so let’s not box ourselves in. Let’s allow ourselves to be human—because when we do, we’re actually more likely to achieve our goals. If you’ve already abandoned your resolution because you weren’t perfect, I encourage you to pick it back up. Reflect on what you learned about yourself and get back on track. I guarantee that when you reach your goal, no one is going to ask how many times you stumbled along the way.

Speaking of getting back on track, SEAHO is also returning from break, and we are just seven weeks away from our annual conference in Winston-Salem (remember to register if you haven’t already)! In addition to the countdown to the biggest event of our housing year, here are a few updates to help you ease back into the swing of things:

• RELI 2026 Faculty Applications are currently open. This is a valuable and meaningful experience—please consider applying.
  
  

• Our Annual Pre-Conference Business Meeting is scheduled for Friday, February 13 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern. Important information will be shared, so please mark your calendar.
  
  

• We have announced our Elections Slate! Be sure to review the information later in this newsletter to learn more about the future of SEAHO leadership. As a reminder, each institution’s SHO serves as the voting member—please share your thoughts with them so they can cast an informed vote.
  
  

• Next week, I will attend the ACUHO-I Regional Leadership Summit in Columbus, Ohio, alongside April Barnes, our President-Elect, and Aubree Adams, our Director of Communications.

December 2025 Presidential Update

Hello SEAHO,

I hope this message finds you well amidst closing activities, staff holiday gatherings, and the planning of how you’ll spend your winter break (hopefully not on duty — and for those who are, thank you). I don’t know about you, but I’m working to wrap up projects, clear out my inbox, and shift into vacation mode with a clearer head. Every January, after a two-week break, it always takes me a moment to remember who I am and what job I do!

As we look back on 2025, it feels worthwhile to pause and notice where we’ve been and the ways we’ve grown. Almost like one of those “Let’s remember 2025” lists — but this time, about you, not the world. The challenges you navigated, the skills you picked up without even realizing it, the small shifts that added up over the year. I came across a quote recently that stuck with me: “I’m not everything I want to be yet, but I’m a lot of things I wanted to be two years ago.” It’s a good reminder that progress doesn’t always announce itself; sometimes it shows up quietly in the ways we’ve changed without noticing.

In the same way, SEAHO has been quietly but steadily making progress toward our goals. Here are a few highlights:

• Last week, the Governing Council approved an additional investment opportunity with ACUHO-I to support professional development events for our membership. We’ll share more about this at the February Business Meeting.

• We are also close to finalizing conference host sites for 2028, 2029, and 2030.

• We also made decisions about funds previously tied to the former SPE program — a little more than $11,000 — which will now support member-focused career development initiatives. Our Career Support Services Committee will help determine how this investment can benefit SEAHO over the coming years. I’m also excited for the new Career Fair they are organizing for SEAHO 2026.

• Our elections slate will be announced soon, SEAHO Awards are in, and we’re in the home stretch of the 2020–2025 Strategic Plan.

• Jana Jordan-Miller, our Director of State Representatives, recently represented SEAHO at the SAACURH Regional Leadership Conference. She shared with our housing student leaders how their skills connect to a future in student affairs.

• And if you haven’t registered for SEAHO 2026 yet, please check that off your list before you leave for winter break. Even though the early-bird deadline is behind us, the conference continues to be one of the most affordable and meaningful professional development opportunities you can attend.

As we close out the year, I hope you’re able to step away long enough to catch your breath, reflect on the months behind you, and return with a little more space — mentally, emotionally, and physically — than you left with. There’s no pressure to reinvent yourself on January 1; growth doesn’t happen overnight, and even small moments of clarity, rest, or reflection can make a big difference. Simply noticing what you want more of (and less of) in your life and work is a meaningful step forward. Thank you for the countless ways you contribute to our association, for your dedication to your students and colleagues, and for the energy and ideas you bring to SEAHO every day. I wish you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season filled with rest, laughter, and connection, and I look forward to all that we’ll accomplish together in the coming year.

November 2025 Presidential Update

Hello SEAHO,

First, I want to thank the many of you who have shared that you enjoy reading these little articles I write. Your feedback has given me confidence in my written communication skills beyond the countless emails I send each month in my day job. It brings me so much joy to know that the things I’m working through or reflecting on are often the same things you’re thinking about too.

This month, I want to share that I’ve been struggling with focus. It’s shown up as “task hopping” at work, giving half my attention to my family, and thinking to myself, “Just get through this day, Shannon.” Out of exhaustion one night last week, I gave myself a pep talk and decided to figure out why I was struggling to be fully present. The verdict is still out, but I think what’s really pulling at me is that I’m trying to do too much at once—and measuring my success by how much I can get done. I’ve been putting so much pressure on each day that I end up rushing through it.

So, I’ve decided to turn my focus on the depth of what I do. When I look at the people I admire most, they tend to have small, close circles. Their presence is deeply felt, and they move through life with peace. We often give so much credit to expansion, but what if we focused instead on refinement—on depth over breadth? It’s not easy, but I’m learning to care more about how well I do things rather than how much I do.

For SEAHO, we’re coming off a really busy October filled with a lot of activity. I want to now downshift and focus on the quality of what we’re doing as an organization. We’ve entered the pre-conference portion of the SEAHO year, and I feel very good about our progress toward our goals. Our most recent edition of the newsletter highlights so much of this great work. As we move into the final weeks of the semester, let’s resist the urge to take on new tasks. Let’s finish what we’ve started—and finish it with excellence. Most of all, let’s refine our focus and step into the holiday season centered on peace.

As part of SEAHO’s ongoing commitment to professional growth across all career stages, the organization is excited to announce the creation of the Mid-Level Summit.

This initiative emerged from membership feedback, which identified a growing need to better serve professionals navigating the mid-level stage of their housing careers. Building on the proven success of RELI—our region’s signature leadership development program for entry-level professionals—SEAHO recognized an opportunity to expand support for those advancing to the next level of leadership.

A task force was charged with exploring this idea, and at the Mid-Year meeting, Meghan Luzader, Task Force Chair, and Jenna Jeslis, Task Force Member, presented the Mid-Level Summit concept to the Governing Council. Following their presentation, the voting members approved the establishment of this new professional development experience.

More details (co-chair selection, site selection, etc.) about the Mid-Level Summit will be shared by Spring 2026, with the inaugural Mid-Level Summit being held in 2027.

October 2025 Presidential Update

Greetings SEAHO Colleagues,

Ahhh, October. I love this month—it’s the perfect excuse to break out the fall wardrobe, indulge in pumpkin spice everything (I even found it on popcorn at the grocery store…and yes, I bought it), enjoy playoff baseball, carve pumpkins, and of course, go trick-or-treating with my kids. I felt a genuine spark of joy when the calendar flipped to October 1.

In a conversation with a student this week, I was reminded that it’s also mid-term season. That got me thinking: what if we applied that same idea to our professional lives? Just as students pause to measure progress and recalibrate, this could be a moment for us to do the same—minus the late-night cram sessions.

I asked myself: How am I really doing? What have I accomplished? Where do I need to refocus? And what do I need to let go of? Recently, during a University Life leadership retreat, we exchanged both affirming and critical feedback. It was a little scary, but also incredibly meaningful—it helped me reflect on who I am as a leader and gave me clarity on how I can grow. That experience turned my “professional mid-term” into something energizing rather than discouraging, and I’m adding it to the list of things I love about this month.

Speaking of mid-terms, I’m just a few days away from our annual Mid-Year Conference in Winston-Salem. I’m looking forward to reconnecting with so many of you and to taking stock of our shared progress. We’ll be voting on our new Strategic Plan, discussing the Mid-Level Institute, and hearing from committees about the impactful work they are doing to move SEAHO forward. I’m also excited to watch our programming committee in action as they select the programs that will shape the educational experience of SEAHO 2026.

In other SEAHO news, I’m thrilled to share that Scott Rausch (Emory University) has accepted the role of our next RELI Co-Chair! Scott brings a deep well of RELI experience, and I know his leadership will help make an already strong program even stronger. Soon, we’ll also be opening the application process for schools interested in hosting RELI in 2027, 2028, and 2029.

And that’s not all—opportunities abound this season. Be on the lookout for calls for RELI Faculty, Executive Board nominations, and Committee Chair applications. As you do your own professional mid-term check-in, I encourage you to ask yourself: How do I want to contribute to SEAHO? Where do I want to lean in? The doors are open, and the opportunities are knocking.

So, as you sip that pumpkin spice latte (or whatever fall treat you love most), take a moment to reflect: How are you doing, and what do you have to give to our profession as we head into the final stretch of 2025?

Nominations for the 2026-2027 SEAHO Executive Board!

The SEAHO Nominations & Elections Committee will welcome nominations for the three Executive Board positions for this upcoming year. Please consider nominating a colleague or yourself for the President-Elect, Director of State Representatives, or Secretary position. More information about each position can be found below. You can submit your nominations from Monday, October 27th until Monday, November 10th.

Position Descriptions from the SEAHO Constitution

President-Elect (3-year Term)

The President-Elect shall preside at all Association functions in the absence of the President; serve as the chairperson of the Awards and Recognition Committee; before installation as President appoint incoming committee chairs, and perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by either the President or the Governing Council. The President-Elect shall be elected at the annual conference for a three-year commitment of service, which includes one year in each of the offices of the President-Elect, President, and Past President. Shall serve on the SEAHO Budget Review Committee. 

Director of State Representatives (2-year Term)

The Director of State Representatives is elected for a two- year term to work with the ten SEAHO State Representatives; serve as a liaison between state representatives and the Executive Board; serve on the SEAHO Budget Review Committee; and perform duties and responsibilities as assigned by the President or the Governing Council. Specific duties are outlined in the SEAHO Leadership Manual. 

Secretary (2-year Term)

The Secretary shall serve as the official correspondent and record keeper for the Association, and perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by either the President or the Governing Council. The Secretary is elected for a two-year term. Shall serve on the SEAHO Budget Review Committee.

Specific responsibilities for each of these positions (and others, if you’re interested in that sort of thing) can be found in the SEAHO Leadership Manual.

We made it through August, and here we are settling into the rhythm of September. Before you get too deep into your new routine, let me circle back to something I mentioned in July: did you schedule that day off for yourself? If not, it’s not too late. Carving out time to recharge is essential, especially after the whirlwind that opening brings. So consider this your friendly reminder—before your calendar fills up completely, give yourself that one small gift of rest.

Now, let’s talk about routines. Some of us thrive on them; others find them stifling. Personally, I love a good routine (which probably doesn’t surprise those who know me well). Routines bring me freedom by removing unnecessary decisions from my day. Whether it’s a go-to breakfast, a regular workout, a grocery shopping day, or that weekly phone call with a friend—these small rituals provide structure and stability amidst the chaos.

But not all routines serve us well. Maybe it’s the endless scroll through social media, the pricey (and highly caffeinated) daily Starbucks stop, or the habit of checking work email when we don’t need to. These patterns can drain us without adding much value. This month, as we lean into our fall routines, I encourage you to pause and reflect: which habits make your life smoother, and which ones might you shift or let go of to create space for a healthier, more present you? Sometimes changing just one small habit creates a ripple effect in all the right ways.

Speaking of routines, SEAHO is right on schedule with our annual calendar. Our Mid-Year Meeting in Winston-Salem is quickly approaching, and it promises to be a pivotal gathering. Committees will be advancing important initiatives, the Governing Council will be shaping decisions that guide our future, and together we’ll continue building momentum toward a strong conference this spring. It’s always energizing to see so many moving pieces come together in service of our members and our mission.

At the same time, our conference site selection committee, led by Dei Allard, is exploring future host cities for 2028, 2029, and 2030. I’m excited about the possibilities they’re uncovering, and I know their work will set us up for vibrant and meaningful conferences for years to come.

Finally, I want to highlight an important opportunity for your voice to shape SEAHO’s future. In this edition of the newsletter, you’ll find a condensed version of our draft Strategic Plan along with a feedback form. Many of you shared input during and after our annual conference, and this draft reflects those collective insights. Before the Governing Council votes on adoption, we want to hear from you one last time. Please take a few minutes to read, reflect, and share your thoughts. Your feedback truly matters.

August 2025 Presidential Update

Greetings SEAHO Colleagues,

August is upon us, and that means one thing across the region: we’re deep in the whirlwind of move-ins, RA training, and a thousand conversations that begin with “Quick question…” This time of year is demanding, no doubt—but it’s also one of the most energizing and mission-centered seasons of our work.

It’s the kind of busy where you don’t always remember what day it is, but you do remember to keep caffeine within arm’s reach. This is the work that requires stamina, flexibility, and, most importantly, a sense of humor. Because let’s be honest: sometimes laughter is the only thing standing between us and tears when the elevator breaks down when the check-in lines are longest or an upset parent is complaining to us about the height of the bed as their student stands near shaking their head and looking down at their phone to hide from their embarrassment.

In all seriousness, humor is one of the greatest tools we have—not just for getting through long days, but for building camaraderie, sustaining morale, and reminding each other that we’re human. Share the funny stories. Laugh with your team. Take the moment to enjoy the beautiful, bizarre unpredictability of life in housing. It’s a sign you’re still connected to your purpose and your people.

Speaking of purpose, I’m excited to share that your SEAHO Governing Council met virtually in July. A major focus of our time together was reviewing the draft of our strategic plan—a plan that we believe will guide the association in meaningful, forward-thinking ways over the next several years. We’re centering professional development and regional connection in all we do, and I look forward to sharing more about this work soon.  Please be on the lookout for a draft of the plan and an opportunity from our Assessment and Research Committee to provide your feedback.

Looking ahead, planning is also well underway for our SEAHO Mid-Year Conference this October. The Mid-Year conference is held approximately six months prior to our annual conference and is a time for the Governing Council, Conference Host Committee, and select members of the Programming committee to focus on the important tasks of the region in person.

And for those looking to serve in a deeper capacity, we are currently accepting applications for the next RELI Co-Chair! RELI is an important professional development tool within SEAHO, and co-chairing this experience is a powerful way to support future leaders while building your own network and skillset. The application closes on September 5, so please take a moment to apply or encourage a colleague to consider it.

As you continue through the blur of August, know this: your work matters, your presence matters, and your wellness matters. You are building something lasting—day by day, student by student. And whether your calm comes from mindfulness or memes, I wish you a happy housing new year!

July 2025 Presidential Update

Can you believe it’s already July? This is the time of year when summer starts to slip through our fingers, and things start to feel real. As I write this, I’m on the eve of my family’s annual beach vacation, and I’ve got my favorite activity on the agenda: absolutely nothing. Aside from knowing where we’re staying and that we’ll be near the water, there are no plans. The goal is simple—wake up each morning and ask, “Shannon, what do you feel like doing today?”

I wish I could say that’s how I lived every day—but for now, I’ll take these few days of rest with gratitude. Over the past year, I’ve felt that quiet creep of burnout—not from one thing in particular, but from the sheer weight of the roles I juggle: professional, parent, partner, friend. I know I’m not alone in this. Many of us are givers, doers, and people-pleasers. We say “yes” even when we’re running on empty, worried that saying “no” means missing out.

So this little slice of “doing nothing” is more than just a vacation—it’s a reminder that I deserve rest even when I’m not on the beach. And you do too. Before summer completely gets away from us, I invite you to look ahead to September and block off a day right now—yes, right now—just for you. I’ve already added mine.

• I just returned from Campus Home.Live! in Columbus, Ohio, and I couldn’t have been prouder of our region. SEAHO showed up in force with award winners, presenters, and leaders at every turn. • Our Governing Council meets in just a few days to review the first draft of our Strategic Plan, developed in partnership with Brailsford & Dunlavey. Once we’ve gathered feedback, we’ll be sharing a preview with all of you to ensure we're on the right path moving forward.
  
  

• We’ve selected Bree Gates from the University of Mississippi as our Conference Coordinator for 2028—congrats, Bree!

Welcome to “Illuminate-Innovate” SEAHO 2026! Your 2026 Host Committee has been hard at
work this summer to create what we know will be an unforgettable conference experience.
In June, the Host Committee made our summer site visit to Winston-Salem, where we began
exploring all that this vibrant city has to offer. From historic charm to innovative spaces, we’re
excited about how this location will help bring the SEAHO 2026 theme to life!

Welcome to “Illuminate-Innovate” SEAHO 2026! Your 2026 Host Committee has been hard at
work this summer to create what we know will be an unforgettable conference experience.
In June, the Host Committee made our summer site visit to Winston-Salem, where we began
exploring all that this vibrant city has to offer. From historic charm to innovative spaces, we’re
excited about how this location will help bring the SEAHO 2026 theme to life!

June 2025 Presidential Update

I hope you’re enjoying a well-deserved break—or have some vacation time on the horizon. As I mentioned in last month’s update, this time of year is a crucial opportunity to prioritize you. Investing in your well-being now can make all the difference before the rush of training and opening kicks into full gear.

If you're like me, summer work often comes with a long list of expectations. Throughout the spring semester, phrases like “that’ll be a good summer project” or “I’ll tackle that when I have more time” seem to echo across our offices. When summer finally arrives, the pressure to get everything organized and “ready” for the year can feel like a second New Year’s resolution—to finally get it all together before students return.

But this year, I’m approaching summer differently. Instead of letting it become a season of pressure and procrastination, I’m choosing to release some of those unrealistic expectations. I recently came across a quote that stopped me in my tracks: “Procrastination is the arrogant assumption that God owes you another opportunity to do what you had time to do.” Whew—that hit hard. So here’s my encouragement to you: don’t let summer become your stress season. Pace yourself. Spread your work throughout the year. Delegate when you can. And most importantly, reclaim that childlike joy that summer can still bring.

In SEAHO news, June is shaping up to be an exciting month! Our 2026 Conference Host Committee just wrapped up their summer meeting at our conference site in Winston-Salem. RELI 2025 launches this week at NC State, and our executive board will gather for our summer meeting mid-month at George Mason University. I’m also pleased to share that our Conference Site Selection Committee has been appointed—check out the related article in this newsletter for more details. By the time SEAHO 2026 arrives, we hope to have locations secured for the next three conferences.

I’m looking forward to connecting with many of you at Campus Home.Live! in Columbus, Ohio later this month. SEAHO always shows up with incredible energy and enthusiasm, and I can’t wait to see those of you attending. Don’t forget to swing by our regional social on Sunday, June 29th—it’s always a highlight!

Here’s to releasing the pressure, spreading out the projects, and making space for the joy summer is meant to bring.
