But, most importantly, the hyphen is a symbol of connection, or the coming together or joining of separate entities.  It reflects the possibility and the potential of a greater or a brighter future.  This was true for Winston-Salem, and it is an embodied symbol of the city’s past, present and future …the bringing together of the new and old worlds, the arts and the sciences, the rural meeting the urban.  But, isn’t that what SEAHO is all about…the joining of campus housing professionals from across our region, 10 separate states and hundreds of campus entities coming together, forming a collective of community, service, leadership, and expertise, that as a whole, has the potential to shape the future of the on-campus, residential experience as we know it.  That's the power of the hyphen!

Highlights from Sweet Home SEAHO 2025

This year in Huntsville, SEAHO 2025 will be the first region to have several of its programming sessions eligible for Continuing Education Credits through the Higher Education Consortium for Student Affairs Certification. With strong collaborative work with the ACUHO-I Home Office, SEAHO members who hold one of the certifications in Core or Campus Housing and Residential Life will be able to earn continuing education credit towards recertification. This provides another opportunity to showcase the strength of the SEAHO region and the educational quality of programs submitted.

Information on Student Affairs Certification

With the goal of promoting and advancing the field of student affairs, seven national organizations,

ACUI, AFA, ASCA, NACA, NIRSA, NASPA and of course ACUHO-I have come together to coordinate efforts through the Higher Education Consortium for Student Affairs Certification. Student Affairs Educator Certification includes seven credentials, the core Student Affairs certification and six specialty areas; Campus Activities, Campus Housing and Residential Life, Campus Recreation, College Unions, Fraternity and Sorority Life, and Student Conduct Administration. First Sweet Home SEAHO In-Person Planning Meeting

Scheduled for June 2-5, this meeting marked our first chance to scope out the venues and the ever-changing city in northern Alabama.  It is one major step of our journey towards creating an exceptional conference experience for all attendees.  The host committee came together to start in-person planning and when I say we have an exceptional group, it's a major understatement! This group bonded a ton and we made some great headway towards planning our festivities in Huntsville.

The venue and all staff involved at Embassy Suites-Huntsville and Von Braun Center were so hospitable and helpful with every step. We can't wait to host 700-800 of our closest friends and colleagues this February at this beautiful hotel, convention center, and city!

Huntsville has so much to do, so start planning your stay with us! Havok (hockey) will be in town on the Saturdays before and after our conference. NASA has awesome programs in town, too!  The host committee enjoyed a comedy show and a Trash Pandas (baseball) while we were in town. I don't think anyone can beat this summer site visit experience!  I can't wait until Mid-year!!

Hello SEAHO -

I hope that you all made it home safely and have found some downtime before diving back into things on your campuses. 

We thank you for joining us and making SEAHO 2024 a record-breaking gathering for our association! We look forward to finalizing our numbers and will share more in an upcoming SEAHO report. As I shared on Friday, serving as your Conference Coordinator for SEAHO 2024 was an honor and privilege. That said, it wouldn’t have been possible without the fantastic team of professionals who made up your host committee, so I extend one last thank you to them! 

In closing, I want to challenge us to remember the Labor Acknowledgment shared at this year’s conference. Particularly that “labor is manifest in our lived world through the lens of capitalism. It can be seen in the buildings we live or work in. It is in the spaces in which we enjoy leisure or nourish ourselves. It is in the creation of innovations that impact our human experiences here in the United States”. As we chart (y)our course forward, let us consider how our work impacts and is impacted by the long-lasting reach of slavery and oppression and find ways to honor unseen labor and impacts. 

I wish you all a smooth remainder of your spring semester, and may the upcoming spring break provide an opportunity for you to rest and reset as we head into the summer months.

Hello SEAHO! 

As the fall semester comes to a close, I wish you and yours a smooth closing and transition period as well as happy holidays! 

As I prepared for a recent vacation, I wanted to find a reading to help keep me centered on the troubled history of our host city. Thanks to Amazon, I came across Charleston: Race, Water, and the Coming Storm; in her book, Crawford “chronicles the tumultuous recent past in the life of the city—from protests to hurricanes—while revealing the escalating risk in its future”. Again, I encourage each of you to hold space for what it means for us to gather in Charleston. 

Finally, with Thanksgiving just behind us, I would be remiss to not offer my continued gratitude to the 2024 Host Committee. These dedicated volunteers have given - and will continue to give - their time to finalize the details of our time together in Charleston. As we move into January, expect to begin seeing more details of the conference; you can always stay up to date by following SEAHO on Facebook and Instagram and checking out our conference website!

I hope you are well and that as we transition into the holiday season you are able to find moments to rest and reflect. I know that as Thanksgiving approaches I am reminded of how thankful I am for SEAHO, our leadership, the tireless work of the 2024 Host Committee, and of the many relationships forged through shared service to our association. 

The 2024 Host Committee remains hard at work beginning to finalize the details of our time together in Charleston. Below are a few highlights/reminders for your review.  

Demographic Questions

As noted on the registration form, our host committee is centering time on Wednesday morning for connection around both professional and personal identities. This work is rooted in SEAHO’s values and in previous conference feedback. 

• To do so, we’ve added questions about gender identity, sexual orientation, and race/ethnicity to the registration form. These questions were developed after consulting a resource on Creating Inclusive Surveys from the University of Pennsylvania. 

• The questions asked will help the Host Committee and the DEI Committee in coordinating these connection spaces. 

  • Responses will only be used in the aggregate and access to the website's administrative backend is limited and managed by the Director of Communications and Webmaster. 

• These questions are standard practice among our national associations (ACUHO-I, ACPA, and NASPA) as a part of the membership profile. It is our hope that these questions will be part of SEAHO’s membership profiles in the future. 

• Finally, if for whatever reason someone is unwilling to disclose their gender identity or sexual orientation there is a ‘prefer not to say’ option that allows them to opt out. 

Program Slate

Under the outstanding leadership of Andrew Pasch (Georgia Institute of Technology), Program Committee Chair, and Stephanie Rewitzer (University of North Carolina at Charlotte), Program Committee Chair-Select, our Program Committee has put together an amazing slate of program sessions.

This year, we experienced a notable uptick in submissions, marking a 25% increase from last year, bringing us closer to pre-pandemic levels. This number of submissions, while exciting, posed a challenge for our program committee as they sought to curate an engaging and diverse schedule which led to a decrease in our proposal acceptance rate to 35%.

Our goal is to showcase the highest quality sessions while ensuring diversity in topic areas, intended audience, and various other factors. The wide range of submissions between topic areas is one of the areas we work to balance while ensuring the slate reflects the evolving interests of our SEAHO members.  

We are excited about the SEAHO 2024 slate! A total of 77 sessions will be spread across 11 rooms within the 7 program blocks. When reviewing the Guidebook in Spring, you should see that we try to offer each topic and audience level in each block as best we can. 

Below is a breakdown of this year’s sessions by different categories as of slating - these numbers will continue to shift as we finalize sessions as the conference approaches.
