Hey SEAHO! (Hey What?!) It’s the final countdown! For those of you who are finishing your first year as a grad student and those of you who are graduating soon, congrats! I can’t believe it’s the end of the year already. It is so hard to stay focused on what is happening day to day when there is so much to look forward to in the last week of April and the first week of May.
No matter where you are in your Res Life career, nothing says FREEDOM more than the idea of the residence halls closing for the summer. But we can’t lose focus! We still have a job to do before closing begins. Closing buildings, preparing for camps and conferences, preparing for summer hall opening, graduating – all these things begin to feel overwhelming when you also have final exams, final programs, and banquets to plan. Now more than ever is a great time to use those legal pads and make to-do lists. Plan ahead and expect the unexpected. Talk to your co-workers and find out what they are doing to prepare for the end of the year. Use your resources!
Do you remember what your motivation was at the beginning of the semester? If that is no longer motivating you, re-evaluate! What will motivate you to do well during these last few weeks? For me, it is really just the idea of knowing that in a few weeks I can say I survived my first year as a full-time SA Professional. Whatever it is for you, keep that fresh in your mind as you move closer to the end of the semester. This will be helpful for you and your staff because chances are your staff is feeling the same stress, anxiety and excitement. As such, try your best to offer words of motivation and encouragement to your RAs! Random treats and simple acts of kindness can go a long way during this time of year. Here are a few motivation and encouragement ideas:
1. Give your staff mini Starbursts with a note that says “Here’s a burst of energy to get you through the week!”
2. Give your staff Girl Scout Thin Mints and say “I Mint to tell you good luck on your exams!”
3. Tape your favorite candy to each day of the work week on a calendar. Each day, you get a treat! (Baby steps, folks. Baby steps.)
4. Move to groove in one of your staff meetings. Who doesn’t love a spontaneous dance party?!
